Topical options in older adults with xerostomia
Investigators have explored the potential benefits of topical treatments in older adult patients with xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction.
In a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Dentistry, investigators used the PubMed, CENTRAL, MEDLINE and Web of Science databases to identify 19 studies focused on the efficacy of topical treatments compared with placebo.
The investigators found that pilocarpine mouthwash/mucoadhesive tablets, 1% malic acid and thyme-honey mouth rinse were all effective in managing xerostomia; however, the treatments were ineffective in improving salivary flow rates.
The results of the study indicated that certain topical treatments could help alleviate xerostomia and enhance the quality of life in older patients unable to receive systemic drugs.
