Therapeutic efficacy of CBD in oral diseases

...

Cannabidiol could help manage certain oral issues.

In a systematic review published in The Journal of the American Dental Association, investigators examined the outcomes of seven trials focused on the topical and oral applications of CBD in patients with orofacial pain, bruxism, gingivitis and temporomandibular joint disorders.

The investigators found that CBD reduced postoperative dental pain, bruxism-related pain, myofascial pain and aphthous ulcer size. They noted that CBD-containing toothpastes and mouth rinses improved bleeding, plaque and gingival inflammation. Further, a CBD-based lozenge managed pathogenic Streptococcus mutans populations compared with placebo.

Despite the positive early findings, the investigators stressed that prior to widespread adoption of CBD-based products in the management of oral diseases, larger clinical trials are needed to validate the results.
