Sifting through Halloween candy to keep cavities at bay
Experts provided a comprehensive guide to making tooth-healthy choices when faced with a bounty of Halloween candy.
The experts urged against consuming hard, sticky and sour candies, according to a report from Tufts University. They noted that both hard and sticky candies can linger in the oral cavity for long periods of time and elevate the risk of dental caries — with sticky candies adhering to the teeth and potentially loosening braces and fillings. Hard candies can also crack or chip the teeth. Sour candies contain acidic ingredients that can erode the tooth enamel.
Those looking to maintain their dental health through Halloween were advised to opt for safer options such as chocolate, savory snacks like cheese and nuts, and sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production and neutralize acids in the mouth. Individuals can also choose alternatives to treats, including toys, stickers and other nonfood prizes.
Additionally, parents can set limits and rules on candy consumption so that sugary foods are eaten in moderation and not throughout the day. Individuals who enjoy Halloween candy should rinse their mouth with water just afterward to wash away the sugars and acids residing on the teeth and continue brushing at least twice daily.
