Relationship between periodontal biofilm, Type 1 diabetes
Periodontal pathogens could be linked to metabolic control in patients with Type 1 diabetes.
In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine, researchers used subgingival plaque samples and glycated hemoglobin measurements to examine the microbial composition and glycemic control of 42 adult patients with Type 1 diabetes. The patients were planning to undergo complex oral rehabilitation with orthodontic treatment and implant surgery.
The researchers discovered a high presence of Tannerella forsythia followed by Treponema denticola, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Prevotella intermedia. Both T. forsythia and T. denticola were more prevalent among the patients with greater serum levels of glycated hemoglobin.
The findings demonstrated that certain subgingival bacteria could be linked to poorer metabolic control in this patient population.
