Plant compounds could protect against metabolic diseases

...

In study results presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, researchers shared study results showing an association between the consumption of a greater amount of phytosterols and a lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Phytosterols are compounds derived from plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

In the study (Abstract OR23-05-25), investigators examined the dietary habits of more than 206,000 individuals from three large prospective cohorts for up to 36 years. Using validated food frequency questionnaires to collect dietary intake data, the investigators assessed the intake of the compounds beta-sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol. They were also able to examine plasma metabolic biomarkers and plasma metabolomics data in two subsets of participants.

Their findings that higher intake of phytosterol, particularly Beta-sitosterol, was associated with a lower risk of type two diabetes and cardiovascular disease was supported by multiple layers of evidence.
