Effects of vaping on teeth
Vaping could impact individuals’ oral health, according to a report from The Guardian.
Experts cited in the article detailed that smoking can lead to halitosis, brown stains on the teeth, loss in taste and periodontal disease that can result in tooth loss. Further, the habit is linked to adverse immune system effects and oral cancers.
Although the extent of damage vaping has on oral health is not currently well established, the experts noted that studies have demonstrated that individuals who vape may be at risk of oral health issues. For instance, one study uncovered a slightly increased risk of gum disease among vapers compared with former smokers and nonsmokers. Another study found that individuals who vaped were more likely to experience dental caries compared with nonsmokers and nonvapers. The experts hypothesized that the dry mouth often reported by vapers could contribute to the elevated risk of oral health issues because the products can interfere with the protective effects of saliva and leave the teeth susceptible to decay.
Nonetheless, the experts emphasized that further studies are needed to clarify the correlation between vaping and oral health issues.
