Dental implant survival in patient with periodontitis, diabetes mellitus

Dental implants could have the potential to survive long-term in patients with periodontitis and diabetes mellitus. However, these patients often have a high rate of complications, including peri-implantitis and implant failure.

In a case report published in Cureus, researchers reevaluated the long-term survival of dental implants in a patient with chronic periodontitis and diabetes mellitus.

After a follow-up of eight years, the researchers found that following appropriate periodontal therapy and optimal implant placement, the dental implants remained functional and stable.
