Clinical effectiveness of propolis on endodontic treatment of permanent teeth

In a systematic review published in Cureus, investigators used the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases to identify eight randomized clinical trials focused on the safety, efficacy and applications of propolis in endodontic treatment.

The investigators noted that propolis was used for direct pulp capping in vital pulps and root canal disinfection and filling in nonvital pulps. Although propolis was found to improve inflammation, tissue healing and disinfection of the root canal system, the material offered no benefit over other materials.

The research suggested that there may not be enough evidence demonstrating the benefit of propolis in permanent teeth in the endodontic treatment setting. Additional studies may be needed to more fully understand the material’s safety and efficacy.
