BMI may be linked to mandibular ridge resorption in postmenopausal women
Investigators have examined the relationship between mandibular ridge resorption and body mass index in postmenopausal women with or without dentures.
Mandibular ridge resorption is a known issue among edentulous patients, especially postmenopausal women.
In a study published in Cureus, the investigators divided 60 completely edentulous postmenopausal women into two groups on the basis of denture status and BMI. They discovered a significant positive association between BMI and mandibular ridge resorption and a slight negative association among those who didn’t wear dentures.
The findings indicated that clinicians should consider BMI in this patient population and attempt to preserve the residual ridge through several strategies — including broad area coverage, reduced denture teeth and optimal occlusal tooth design.
