Bill threatening state’s access to fluoride in drinking water stalled

...

Lawmakers in Tennessee have introduced a bill that would end community water fluoridation across the state. As the session draws to a close, none of the bills have advanced.

The new bill, SB 0162/HB 2396, would have prohibited community water systems from adding fluoride to public drinking water, according to a news article from WSMV. A separate bill, SB 2304/HB 2471, also would have prevented the sale of bottled water that adds fluoride.

Community water fluoridation has long been considered one of the most effective public health initiatives of the 20th century. The practice has led to reductions in the rate of dental decay among children. Dental experts have warned the passage of the bills would introduce injurious policies that would undo gains in public health, particularly among individuals residing in rural areas of Tennessee who may have limited access to oral health care.

“It’s important that we help support the health of our community, especially those that are disadvantaged and at risk,” emphasized J. Allen Burleson, D.D.S., president of the Tennessee Dental Association.
