2 dental implant types examined at 1 year

...

Researchers have examined the one-year outcomes of zirconia and titanium dental implants.

In a study published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, the researchers randomly assigned patients to receive more than 100 screw-retained, zirconia or titanium implant-supported all-ceramic single crowns. They then assessed restoration survival, technical complications, peri-implant soft-tissue parameters and esthetic outcomes at three weeks post-crown insertion and after one year of follow-up. The researchers detailed that the zirconia dental implants were comprised of a two-piece zirconia implant and titanium base connection and the titanium implant was comprised of a conventional titanium base.

While veneered zirconia crowns had higher rates of complications compared with monolithic restorations, the researchers found no statistically significant differences in technical complications or peri-implant soft-tissue parameters between the zirconia and titanium implant groups. Further, both the zirconia and titanium implants demonstrated 100% survival rates.

The findings suggested that the zirconia and titanium implants both exhibited favorable outcomes after one year.
