ADA debuts new informatics standards webpage for easy access, adoption

...

The American Dental Association is making it easier than ever to access and adopt its informatics standards.

The ADA’s main dental standards webpage now links to a new landing page on informatics standards, where visitors can find the standards divided into 10 categories: terminology and nomenclature, clinical data exchange, administrative data exchange, augmented and artificial intelligence, imaging, specialty-specific data exchange, forensics, electronic prescriptions, architecture and security, and medical devices.

“In today's digital health care environment, seamless communication between systems is essential, not only for efficiency but also for the quality of care we provide. The ADA’s dental informatics standards ensure that both clinical and administrative technologies work together securely and accurately,” said Jennifer Thompson, D.D.S., vice chair of the ADA Council on Dental Practice. “Equally important is the accessibility of these standards. A centralized, user-friendly website allows software developers and industry partners to align their products with the needs of modern dental practices. This alignment supports better interoperability and data consistency and ultimately leads to improved patient care.”

Each category page lists the title and scope of its standards, as well as links to purchase them from the ADA Store. ADA members can purchase standards at a discounted rate and access technical reports for free.

“Clear, consistent standards are crucial for providers to securely exchange patient data, streamline workflows and ensure that the technology serves the patients. By making informatics standards more accessible and transparent, the ADA is leading the conversation about responsible data access and interoperability in dentistry,” said Mark Jurkovich, D.D.S., chair of the ADA Standards Program Working Group 11.9 on Core Reference Data. “Robust, accessible informatics standards are essential for driving consistency, interoperability and innovation across dental care, and this update streamlines access for professionals at every level. The ADA is providing dental professionals and industry vendors with the resources they need to navigate the growing landscape of digital dental care and adopt best practices in their organizations.”

The ADA is an American National Standards Institute-Accredited Standards Developer and has been at the forefront of the development of dental standards since 1928. These standards establish requirements for safe and effective dental products and technologies through a consensus-based process.

The ADA creates and advances dental informatics standards both nationally and internationally, collaborating with partners to ensure standards evolve alongside clinical practices and technologies. These initiatives promote interoperability, enhance care quality and safety, and facilitate seamless data exchange within dental and broader health care systems.
