ADA standards on forensic dental data, oral rinses available for review

Deadline to comment is Feb. 24

...

Two draft standards from the American Dental Association are available for public review and comment until Feb. 24.

The standards, which were developed by ADA Working Group 14.1 Forensic Odontology Informatics Terminology and ADA Working Group No. 7.55 on Oral Rinses, respectively, include:

• Proposed Revision to ANSI/ADA Standard No. 1058 for Forensic Dental Data Set: This revision is a modified adoption of ISO 20888:2020 Dentistry — Vocabulary and Designation System for Forensic Oro-Dental Data. The standard aims to develop uniform terminology for describing forensic dental data and define a standardized set of consistent terms for human identification using orofacial data.

• Proposed ANSI/ADA Standard No. 175 for Dentistry — Antimicrobial Oral Rinses: This standard is a modified adoption of ISO 16408:2015 Dentistry — Oral Care Products — Oral Rinses. The standard defines physical and chemical requirements and test methods for antimicrobial oral rinses. It also specifies the accompanying information, including manufacturer instructions for use and marking and/or labeling requirements. This standard is not applicable to other delivery systems, such as mouth sprays, foams and powders. It is not intended to describe regulatory aspects, including methods of prescription.

The ADA, which is an American National Standards Institute-Accredited Standards Developer, has played a key role in the development of dental standards since 1928. The working groups that develop ADA standards are a diverse mix of expert volunteers representing dental practitioners, industry, government and academia. Volunteers work together on documents that establish requirements for safe and effective dental products and technologies through a consensus-based process. Involvement is open to anyone who would like to contribute their expertise.
