JADA welcomes new senior associate editor
Role will help identify major issues facing oral health

The Journal of the American Dental Association has added a new role to its editorial leadership team to help identify and tackle important issues facing oral health, such as artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.
Michael Newman, D.D.S., past editor-in-chief of the PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry Channel, has joined the team as senior associate editor. Dr. Newman is the senior author of Newman and Carranza's “Clinical Periodontology and Implantology,” 14th edition, the most widely used periodontal textbook in the world. He has also published more than 200 abstracts and articles in peer-reviewed journals and is the founding editor of the Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice and a professor emeritus at the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry.
Dr. Newman was appointed as senior associate editor by JADA Editor-in-Chief Tim Wright, D.D.S. They are joined on the editorial leadership team by several associate editors.
“Having Dr. Michael Newman join the JADA editorial team as the senior associate editor is very exciting given his extensive expertise in oral health care and publishing,” Dr. Wright said. “His connections with key opinion leaders in dentistry and industry will help us advance our mission to bring the very best science of clinical relevance to the readership and ADA members. I look forward to working with Dr. Newman as we explore innovations in publishing that will take advantage of the new JADA digital format and our ability to present information in an accessible and digestible fashion.”
In his new role, Dr. Newman will work with Dr. Wright to acquire, review and edit articles for JADA, soliciting manuscripts from leaders in research, clinical care and the health care industry to enrich the content of the journal.
“I’m looking forward to working with Dr. Wright on our shared goals of growing the stature of JADA. We will accomplish this by publishing high-quality articles that are authoritative, useful and important to the profession,” Dr. Newman said. “Our readers’ trust will be earned through rigorous peer review. The journal will be the go-to publication of the world’s best and most respected authors for publishing their research. I will assist Dr. Wright in recruiting key opinion leaders, clinical role models and influencers who will also provide timely commentaries on leading-edge science and technology important to dentistry and the patients we serve.”
