A new section appearing in The Journal of the American Dental Association and JADA Foundational Science offers dentists a window into new technologies, therapeutic approaches and health care trends.

Developed in partnership with the ADA Forsyth Institute, the section titled Innovations of Excellence, Powered by ADA Forsyth intends to raise awareness of emerging issues and cutting-edge research directions to keep busy dentists apprised of trends expected to affect health care delivery and the practice of dentistry.

“We are excited to launch this new section as it will provide the readership with a synopsis into remarkable advances in science and how recent scientific breakthroughs will be shaping health care,” said Ana Bedran-Russo, D.D.S., Ph.D., associate editor of the new section.

The section’s first article, published in October, covers disruptive events in dentistry. In it, ADA Forsyth CEO Wenyuan Shi, Ph.D., and Director of Communications and External Relations Jill Sirko, Ph.D., discuss how disruptive events throughout history — from the increase of refined sugar in Western diets in the 1700s to the emergence of artificial intelligence in the 2010s — have shaped the field of dentistry.

“The field of dentistry is really exploding right now in the areas of technology and scientific innovation, with major developments in artificial intelligence, genomics, the oral microbiome, regenerative medicine and biomaterials,” Dr. Shi said. “This new section will provide dentists with the most accurate and up-to-date information about the cutting-edge innovations driving a new era in dentistry.”

While ADA Forsyth will continue to contribute significantly to the series, it is open to contributions from other organizations and authors with an oral health innovation to share.
