ADA white paper on augmented intelligence in dentistry available for comment

Deadline for remarks is Aug. 15

A white paper on the use of artificial and augmented intelligence in dentistry is available for comment from the American Dental Association Standards Committee on Dental Informatics.

Proposed ADA SCDI White Paper No. 1106 for an Overview of Artificial and Augmented Intelligence Uses in Dentistry introduces the use of artificial and augmented intelligence in clinical disciplines, including prevention, caries and periodontal disease, implants, oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, imaging, orthodontics and more. The paper also provides information on nonclinical areas, with a focus on payer topics, such as claims processing, payment integrity and dental practice administrative issues.

SCDI Working Group 13.8 on Augmented Intelligence in Dentistry is developing the paper, as well as additional standards and technical reports on artificial and augmented intelligence, including proposed ADA Standard No. 1110 for Dentistry — Validation Dataset Guidance for Image Analysis Systems Using Artificial Intelligence. Volunteers interested in developing these documents are encouraged to join the working group by sending a request to standards@ada.org.

The draft white paper is available for download at ADA.org/dentalstandards. The comment deadline is Aug. 15.

The ADA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute to develop national standards for products and information technology used by dental professionals and consumers. There are currently more than 100 national standards, and more are under development.
