Mock trial helps dentists understand how to protect themselves from malpractice

For providers who have questions regarding legal issues during a malpractice trial, the ADA is offering a mock trial to help them better understand what they can expect and what to do to protect themselves.

Mock Trial: Topic Oral Sepsis (2115) , on Oct. 12 from 2-5 p.m. at Lagoon H in the Mandalay Bay South Convention Center, will show dentists what it is like in a courtroom during a dental malpractice trial.

During the mock trial, dentists will learn how they are expected to answer and what attorneys will try to provide to find a dentist liable. Malpractice attorneys and a dental expert witness will recreate an actual malpractice case involving oral sepsis to help answer these questions. Attendees will also learn what needs to be proven in court for a dentist to be found guilty of negligence and malpractice. Expect it to be gut wrenching, with participants potentially being asked to be part of the jury.

Worth three hours of continuing education, the course will be presented by Mitchell J. Gardiner, D.M.D., assistant clinical professor of restorative dentistry at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Speakers include Ryan Donihue, dental malpractice defense attorney, and Jo A. Jagor, medical malpractice defense attorney.
